There is an old saying which says that the only two things that are certain in life are death and taxes. To this short list we should really add change as a third certainty. From the miracle of birth we are all of us in a state of constant change both personally and professionally. In the modern global business environment companies need to adapt and change to meet new challenges as well as to continue to grow and develop. Key to achieving this adaptation or change are the individuals who make up the organisation. The main problem with organisational change is that in large part it isn't usually handled well. This leads to individuals feeling a loss of control over events and increased levels of stress, anxiety or apathy. This is usually due to individuals feeling that change is being imposed on them and that the concepts being expressed by those "in the know" are being 'sold' to them. This selling of the change concept by organisations is a common mistake. As human being we are naturally suspicious of imposed or sold change. Effective change management relies on delivering change on three levels self, team and the wider organisation. Failure to engage the individual effectively in the need to change has a knock on effect for the team and by default the larger organisation. Effective change looks rather like the ripples in a pond after a stone is thrown in. The stone represents the idea or need for change, the pond the wider organisation with the rings representing the desire for change radiating from the core (self) outwards through Team and the wider organisation.
